Estes golfinhos têm grandes variantes. Variam tanto na cor e padrão como na forma do corpo, bico, barbatanas dorsais e peitorais. Com a idade, algumas espécies mudam mesmo de aparência. Partilham, no entanto, características, entre as quais o bico relativamente curto e indistinto, o corpo bastante robusto, a testa suavemente inclinada e um entalhe em V no meio da barbatana caudal. A maioria possui uma barbatana dorsal proeminente.
There is great variation. Besides the differences in colour and pattern, the shapes of the bodies, beaks, flippers and dorsal fins are also highly variable. Some species even change in appearance as they age. They do share a number of characteristics, including relatively short, indistinct beaks, fairly robust bodies, smoothly sloping forehead and a notch in the middle of their flukes. Most have prominent dorsal fin.
